The aim in such cases is to create the optimum environment so that your bodies can produce healthy sperm and eggs and together you can conceive and nurture a healthy baby. If you are having difficulty conceiving, both partners need to come for treatment – after all it takes two!
The first three months:
From a naturopathic perspective, I want to know what the internal environment of the body is like – and get it to be optimum for successful conception. It takes three months to mature an egg and three months to produce sperm, so this is the recommended initial period of work before attempting to conceive.
We’ll start by looking at nutrition - we really are what we eat! Every cell in our body is built on the nutrients we have eaten and absorbed. We need to ensure you’re eating a highly nutritious diet, but also that your digestion is functioning properly and actually absorbing those healthful nutrients you’re putting in. The same goes for supplements – they need to be absorbed or they simply won’t work.
At our first appointment I’ll arrange for you both to have a hair mineral analysis test done. This is the first and most important test used to establish levels of essential minerals and heavy metals – it will show us what we need to supplement, and whether you need a detoxification programme to eliminate toxins from your body. We’ll then retest after the initial three month period, which will show us exactly how we’re doing.
Your initial consultation will cover everything from diet and lifestyle analysis, iridological analysis, Chinese tongue diagnosis, and Sara will question you about every aspect of your health and each body system to build up an accurate picture you’re the environment within your bodies. This will enable her to pinpoint whether there are any other factors affecting your fertility such as fungal infections, recurrent or hidden infections without obvious symptoms, or perhaps a food intolerance or allergy at the root of the problem.
Also very important is ensuring a healthy, regular menstrual cycle. Irregularities in the menstrual cycle indicate the hormones are out of balance and need attention.
It isn’t just what is going on internally that is important, but external factors too, such as stress be a contributing factor in infertility. Herbal medicine can deal effectively with stress, changing the way you respond to it, and together with relaxation techniques will make you more relaxed, and more likely to conceive.
